DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College head women's basketball coach Ashlee Kelly has announced that she will step down to become an assistant coach at Iona College, a NCAA Division I program in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). A search for her replacement will begin immediately.
Kelly served as the Mavericks' head coach for the last three years. She took over the program for the 2006-07 season. She quickly turned it around and into an East Coast Conference (ECC) contender. In her first season, Mercy College went on to finish 7-19 overall and 5-15 in ECC play. The Mavericks improved to 6-14 in league play the next year, finishing 6-21 overall. This past season, Kelly guided the squad to a 10-18 overall mark and qualified for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2001-02 with a 7-11 mark in conference action.
During her tenure Kelly coached and recruited numerous talented student-athletes, with her players earning a total of five All-Conference honors along the way. Her squads were equally as successful in the classroom. This past year alone saw seven of her student-athletes earn a 3.25 grade point average or better. Kelly instituted several community service projects with her team, including volunteer work with the Springhurst Children's Center After School Program and the St. Cabrini Nursing Home, both in Dobbs Ferry.
Kelly was also an Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services at Mercy College. In this position she was responsible for oversight of academic monitoring and the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program, and assisted with compliance. Kelly also served as interim co-athletics director for 2007-08.
