DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team capped off its community service efforts for the 2008-09 academic year with a visit to the St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry on Sunday, April 26.
Members of the team spent two hours at the facility, assisting with several activities, daily tasks and running errands. They also spent time sitting and speaking with residents, and attended leisure programs.
"Giving back to the community is very important," said Mavericks' Head Coach Ashlee Kelly. "We are very fortunate to have the ability to do so and the team really enjoys seeing the joy on the faces of those they have helped."
The team has been invited back and plans on returning next year in both the fall and spring semesters, and has another visit planned during the holidays for Christmas caroling.
Each year Mercy College athletics teams commit to a full program of community engagement initiatives. Along with the St. Cabrini Nursing Home visit, the women's basketball team also held a basketball clinic for area Cub Scouts with the men's squad, volunteered at the Springhurst Children's Center After School Program, and helped raise over $1,000 for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
