DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College Athletics Department raised over $1,000 to be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer FundTM at its Pink Zone basketball doubleheader with a packed gymnasium versus Adelphi University on Wednesday, February 18. The Mercy College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spearheaded the effort with contributions from all of the Mavericks' 16 sports.
"I am thrilled with the cooperation exhibited by the SAAC Board in supporting this important initiative," SAAC advisor Dr. Darryl Bullock said. "Board development is a process and we matured as an organization during this effort. that we are so proud to get behind. With the foundation and supporting pieces in place we will build on tonight's success and more fully affirm our mission. For us to raise nearly $1,100 is phenomenal. We already have one of the best game environments in the ECC and another piece of the organization is taking form. We thank everyone who in anyway helped to make this a memorable night."
Highlighting the night's events was a Super Raffle with prize winners announced during timeouts and half time of each game. Student-athletes collected 30 prizes donated by members of the College community and local businesses. Prizes included gift baskets, electronics, restaurant and spa gift certificates, a movie pack and sports apparel. Raffle tickets were sold during the weeks leading up to the doubleheader.

The Mercy College basketball teams represented the department and helped raise awareness on the court in the fight against breast cancer. The women's squad wore pink t-shirts during warm-ups and donned pink socks and shoelaces during the game, while playing with a commemorative pink and white striped basketball that was part of the Super Raffle. The men's squad also showed their support by wearing pink shoelaces. Coaches, staff members and fans also came in their pink gear.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the organization's nation of coaches to assist in raising awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund is the organization's charity of choice in partnership with The V Foundation. To make a contribution, visit www.jimmyv.org or call 1-800-4JimmyV.
