Mavericks Fall to St. Thomas Aquinas 83-70 in ECC Women's Basketball Action

ORANGEBURG, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated in East Coast Conference (ECC) action by St. Thomas Aquinas by a score of 83-70 on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) led the Mavericks with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY) had 14 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) scored 11 points and added three steals.

The Spartans (7-16, 4-10 ECC) got off to a quick start by going on a 10-4 run. However, the Mavericks (7-16, 4-10 ECC) knotted the score at 12 after Levine hit a jumper with 13:24 remaining.

St. Thomas Aquinas responded by going on a 13-2 run, capped off with a lay up by freshman guard Natalie Catavero (New Rochelle, NY) to go up 25-14.

Trailing by eight points with 2:37 remaining in the first half, the Mavericks scored seven consecutive points to cut the deficit to one. Sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) hit a pivotal three-pointer in trimming the lead.

The Spartans scored the final four points of the half to go into the locker room leading 39-34.

In the second half the Spartans pushed their lead up to 13 after freshman center Briana Sloper (Williston Park, NY) drained a lay up with 15:34 remaining. The Mavericks came right back and cut the lead to nine (60-51) after Reece hit a free throw.

St. Thomas Aquinas turned up the heat by scoring the next eight points to take a 17 point lead, their biggest of the game.

With 1:14 left on the clock, Reece connected on a lay up to trim the deficit to seven, but that's as close as the Mavericks would get.

Sloper scored 26 points and grabbed 11 boards for the Spartans. Catavero added 18 points.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, February 18 at 5 p.m. when the Blue & White take on Adelphi.
