Dominant Second Half Leads Mercy College Women's Basketball to Victory over Pioneers
BROOKVILLE, NY
- Trailing by 12 points at the half, the Mercy
College women's basketball team stormed back to defeat East Coast
Conference (ECC) opponent C.W. Post by a score of 77-70 on
Saturday.
Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood
Lake,
NY) scored 16 points and dished
out nine assists. Baxter was 4-of-6 from downtown. Sophomore
forward Delmara Reece
(Yonkers,
NY) recorded a double-double with
17 points and 11 boards. Freshman guard Aimee Levine
(Flushing,
NY) contributed with 17 points on
8-of-10 shooting from the floor.
The Pioneers (8-11, 6-6 ECC) took an 18-10 lead after two free
throws by senior forward Whitney Murrer (Richmond,
VA) with 12:23 remaining in the first half. The Mavericks
(7-14, 4-8) knotted the score up at 22 after a pair of free throws
by freshman guard Simone Williams
(Waldorf,
MD).
The Pioneers rounded out the half by going on an 18-6 run to take a
12 point lead (40-28) into the break.
The Mavericks came out of the locker room red-hot by going on a
17-4 run to take a 45-44 lead with 11:31 remaining. Sophomore guard
Ashley Borofsky
(Southington,
CT) capped off the run with a
three-pointer.
C.W. Post quickly regained the lead after the Pioneers scored the
next six points of the game. Baxter got the Mavericks back within
one point (53-52) when she drained a three-pointer with 9:36
remaining. Mercy took the lead on its next possession on a jumper
by Reece and then Levine put an exclamation point on an 8-0 run to
give the Mavericks a 57-53 lead.
The Pioneers came right back to take a five point lead with 4:16
remaining. The Blue & White scored the next five points to tie
the game at 68 after Levine registered a bucket.
Murrer hit two more free throws on the Pioneers' next possession,
but Baxter came down the floor and hit a trifecta to put Mercy
ahead by one. The Mavericks scored the final six points of the game
to cement the victory.
Freshman forward Noelle Pawlicki (Staten
Island,
NY) and Murrer each scored 17
points for the Pioneers.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they play host to Queens
on Wednesday, February 11 at 5 p.m.
