Mavericks Defeated in ECC Women's Basketball Action by Molloy 77-57
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by East Coast
Conference (ECC) leader Molloy College by a score of 77-57 on
Saturday.
Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY)
recorded a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Senior
guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) added
13 points and four assists. Sophomore forward Ashley
Finnegan (Worcester, MA) contributed with eight points and
four boards.
The Mavericks (6-13, 3-7 ECC) ran out to an early 11-2 lead after a
lay up by freshman Marquesha Moore (Bryans Road,
MD). The Lions (15-3, 9-1 ECC) scored the next seven
points to get within two (11-9) with 12:13 remaining.
The Blue & White responded with a 9-0 run, capped off with a
jumper by Finnegan to take a 20-9 lead. The Mavericks extended its
lead to 13 after another lay up by Moore with 2:43 remaining in the
first half.
The Lions scored the final six points of the half to cut the
deficit to eight (34-26).
Molloy came out hot in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to tie
the score at 40. The Mavericks pulled ahead after a jumper by Reece
and two free throws by senior guard Sasha Bowen (Boston,
MA).
With the score knotted at 45, junior guard E.J. Dreyer
(Floral Park, NY) hit a free throw, followed by a
three-pointer by junior guard Lisa Abitante (Brooklyn,
NY) and a lay up by junior forward Kymira
Woodberry (Boston, MA) to take a six point lead (51-45)
with 11:09 remaining.
The Lions widened its lead to 16 when Woodberry hit a jumper with
5:04 left on the clock to the put the game out of reach.
Woodberry finished with 19 points and 10 boards. Dreyer added 12
points and five boards.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, February 4 when
they play host to Dowling College at 5 p.m.
