Mercy College Women's Basketball Tops NYIT 73-56

OLD WESTBURY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team defeated East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent NYIT on Thursday by a score of 73-56.

Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) scored 17 points and dished out seven assists. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) contributed with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.

The Mavericks (6-12, 3-6 ECC) jumped out to a 7-2 lead with five points scored by Reece. Leading by only two points with 15:12 remaining, the Mavericks scored the next six points on buckets from freshman guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY), senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) and Borofsky.

The Bears (2-16, 1-8 ECC) trimmed the lead down to four points after a jumper by sophomore Lauren Caggiano (Holtsville, NY). The Blue & White responded by scoring the next seven points on a three-pointer by Borofsky sandwiched by two jumpers by Reece to go up by 11 with 8:17 remaining in the first half.

Mercy went into halftime leading 36-26.

The Bears got within six points when junior forward Latoya Anderson (Bronx, NY) sunk a jumper with 18:03 left on the clock. However, the Mavericks went on a 10-0 run to go up by 16 points. Borofsky and Finnegan accounted for all 10 of the points.

NYIT fought back, trimming the deficit back down to six points with 10:59 remaining. The Mavericks kept the heat on by making 13 free throws in the second half. Levine made a jumper to give the Blue & White their biggest lead of the game at 19 points.

The Mavericks out rebounded the Bears 42 to 27.

Junior forward Madison Robertson (Shirley, NY) scored 21 points for the Bears.

The Mavericks will return home to play Molloy College on Saturday, January 31 at 12 p.m.
