Bridgeport Rides Hot Second Half over Mercy College Women's Basketball
BRIDGEPORT, CT
- The Mercy College women's basketball team was
defeated in East Coast Conference (ECC) action by Bridgeport on
Saturday by a score of 83-73.
Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood
Lake,
NY) notched 19 points and five
assists. Sophomore forward Delmara Reece
(Yonkers,
NY) scored 16 points and grabbed
seven boards. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan
(Worcester,
MA) added 12 points, while
freshman guard Aimee Levine
(Flushing,
NY) had 10 points.
The Mavericks (5-12, 2-6 ECC) jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage
on buckets by Baxter and Reece. The Purple Knights (4-12, 4-4 ECC)
responded with a 7-0 run highlighted with a three-pointer by
sophomore guard Julia Basalt
(Viernheim,
Germany).
After two free throws by freshman guard Simone Williams
(Waldorf, MD) knotted the contest at 16, Bridgeport scored
seven of the next nine points to take a five point lead (23-18)
with 6:34 remaining in the first half.
Senior center Siobhan Moore
(Glasgow,
Scotland) connected on a lay up
for the Purple Knights to run the lead up to 10 points with 2:57
remaining. The Mavericks came right back, scoring the final eight
points of the half to go into the locker room trailing 34-32.
Reece opened up the second half with a jumper to tie the score at
34, but Bridgeport got some breathing room after junior guard
Sidney Parsons
(Chandler,
AZ) hit a jumper as a part of a
10-1 run to give Bridgeport a nine point lead.
The Blue & White trimmed the lead to three after senior guard
Jazmin Steele
(Stoughton,
MA) came up with a steal and took
it to the house for a lay up.
However, Bridgeport went on a 13-6 run to take a 10 point lead with
7:10 remaining. The Purple Knights kept the heat on as freshman
forward Julia Colley
(Harlow,
England) hit a three-pointer to
extend the lead to 13.
The Purple Knights went up by as many as 17, but Mercy could only
trim the lead down to 10 as time expired.
Bridgeport shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the second half.
Parsons scored 32 points on 13-of-22 shooting for the Purple
Knights.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28 when
they travel to take on NYIT.
