Baxter Scores 33; Mavericks Come Up Short at Queens

FLUSHING, NY - Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) scored a career-high 33 points, but it wasn't enough as East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Queens defeated Mercy College 83-70 on Monday.

Baxter was 11-for-26 from the floor and hit all but one of her 11 free throw attempts. She also added eight assists, seven rebounds and six steals. Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) scored 10 points, while junior Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) added in 11 points and seven boards.

The Knights (11-4, 5-1 ECC) began the game by going on an 11-4 run and went up by as many as 13 points in the first seven minutes. However, the Mavericks (4-11, 1-5 ECC) trimmed the deficit to seven after Reece hit a jumper with 8:43 remaining in the first half.

After a pair of free throws by Brittany Faherty and Amanda Bartlett, Queens had built its lead back up to 14. To close out the first half the Mavericks went on a 10-1 run, capped off with a jumper by Baxter. The Blue & White trailed at the half by a score of 39-34.

DeVore opened up the second half with a bucket to trim the lead to three. However, Queens responded by going an 18-5 run to go up by 16 points, their biggest lead of the game.

Mercy brought the lead down to eight when Baxter scored the next eight points of the game with 8:38 remaining in the game. Queens again rallied to bring the advantage back up to 13, but the Mavericks fought back on the strength of Baxter who added seven more points to her total in a 9-3 Mercy run.

Down by only five points with 1:58 remaining, Queens put the game out of reach on jumpers by Jennifer DiChiara and Bartlett.

DiChiara and Bartlett each had 26 points for the Knights.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, January 21 when Concordia will visit the Dobbs Ferry Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
