Adelphi Edges Mercy College Women's Basketball 63-61

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated in East Coast Conference (ECC) action by Adelphi University on Saturday by a score of 63-61.

The Panthers (8-7, 5-1 ECC) used a strong second half to overcome a 14 point Mercy lead at the half. Adelphi opened up the second half with a 17-2 run to erase the deficit and take a 40-39 lead.

The Mavericks (4-10, 1-4 ECC) responded by regaining the lead after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT). Mercy led by seven with 5:48 remaining.

However, the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to take the lead back on a lay up by Serita Lee. Ashley Caiafa finished up the scoring with a free throw in the final second.

Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) scored 19 points and dished out 10 assists. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 boards. Borofsky added 16 points and was 3-for-5 from downtown.

The Mavericks got off to a hot start in the first half, scoring eight of the first 10 points. Adelphi came right back to trim the lead to one, but Mercy kept the heat on and went on a 17-4 run to take a 14 point lead with 6:57 remaining in the first half.

Adelphi pulled within 10 in the final minutes of the first half, but the Blue & White scored seven consecutive points before Caiafa hit a three-pointer to trim the deficit to 14 going into the half.

Caiafa scored 16 points for the Panthers while Lee added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Monday, January 19 when they travel to play Queens in ECC action.
