Mavericks Pull Away for 69-52 Triumph over St. Thomas Aquinas in ECC Women's Basketball

Delmara Reece

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) erupted for 26 points and 23 rebounds, and senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) netted 13 points and dished out 10 assists to lead the Mercy College women's basketball team past St. Thomas Aquinas College by a score of 69-52 on Wednesday.

It was Reece's eighth double-double on the year and Baxter's second.  Reece hit 11-of-17 from the field and 4-of-7 at the free throw line. Baxter was 5-for-13 from the field, hitting her only three-point attempt. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) added 11 points for the Mavericks (4-9, 1-3 ECC).

The first half saw six lead changes and four ties. The Mavericks posted a 10-4 lead early in the first frame, but St. Thomas Aquinas (3-11, 0-4 ECC) went on an 8-0 run to regain a 12-10 advantage midway through.

The contest went back-and-forth from there with Mercy pulling ahead 22-18 on a Reece basket and a free throw after being fouled on the play.   The Spartans had one more answer with a 12-4 run to close out the frame, led by six points from Whitney Dugan (Newton, NJ).

Trailing 30-26 at the half, Mercy turned it up on both ends, shooting 48.6 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, while holding the Spartans to just 24 percent.

The Mavericks opened the second stanza with a 9-0 run, getting contributions from four different players to take a 35-30 lead.  After they stretched the margin to 46-34 with 12:04 remaining on a Finnegan jumper, St. Thomas Aquinas put together a 6-1 spurt to pull within seven.

That would be as close as the Spartans would get as Mercy pulled away with a 22-12 run over the final 9:23 to close it out. Baxter netted nine points in the final run with Reece adding six.

Briana Sloper (Williston Park, NY) led St. Thomas Aquinas with 16 points and seven rebounds. Colleen Vogel (Emerson, NJ) added 11 points.  Dugan finished with 10 points.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, January 17, when they travel to Adelphi for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
