Mavericks Power Past Columbia Union 91-44 at New Year's
Classic
WASHINGTON, DC
- The Mercy College women's basketball team had
five student-athletes reach double digits in scoring as they
defeated Columbia Union at the New Year's Classic by a score of
91-44 on Sunday.
Sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky
(Southington,
CT) led all scorers with 16
points. She added four three-pointers and two steals. Sophomore
forward Delmara Reece
(Yonkers,
NY) recorded a double-double with
11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Christina Baxter
(Greenwood Lake,
NY) contributed with 10 points,
eight assists, six boards and five steals. Sophomore forward
Ashley Finnegan
(Worcester,
MA) and freshman guard
Aimee Levine
(Flushing,
NY) each added 13 points for the
Mavericks.
With Mercy trailing 7-6 early in the first half, Borofsky hit her
first three-point shot of the day to give Mercy the lead. The Blue
& White didn't look back as they proceeded to go on a 20-4 run
to take a 27-10 lead. Mercy had six different players score during
the run.
The Mavericks (3-9) kept the pressure on with back-to-back
trifectas from Borofsky. Mercy went into the locker room leading
51-27. The Blue & White shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the
first half.
Already leading 60-35, the Mavericks went on a 14-0 run to seal the
deal. Borofsky hit her final three-pointer of the day to cap the
run with 10:24 remaining.
Kia Baker led Columbia Union (0-15) with 13 points.
The Mavericks will be back in action as conference play resumes on
Saturday, January 10 with a contest at Queens.
