Lady Firebirds Defeat Mercy College Women's Basketball 73-67

WASHINGTON, DC - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by the University of the District of Columbia by a score of 73-67 in the New Year's Classic on Saturday.

Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led the Mavericks with 14 points and 11 assists. Baxter also added seven rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward Marquesha Moore (Bryans Road, MD) notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, MD) and sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) each added 10 points.

The Mavericks (2-9) jumped out to an early 11-3 advantage after a jumper by Williams with 15:21 remaining in the first half. The Lady Firebirds (10-2) cut the lead to three when Stacy Griffith dropped in a lay up.

Baxter extended the Mercy lead up to six on a nifty three-point play. The Lady Firebirds then went on a 16-2 run to take an eight point lead with 9:10 remaining. Mercy scored the final four points of the half on buckets by Reece and freshman guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY) to cut the deficit to five (41-36) going into the intermission.

In the second half Mercy got within two points after Baxter and Reece connected on jumpers with 10:27 remaining.

The Lady Firebirds scored the next five points to build their lead back up to eight points. The Blue & White once again responded with back-to-back baskets by Baxter and junior forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) to bring Mercy within four points with 4:37 remaining.

However, the Lady Firebirds kept their distance, not letting Mercy get any closer.

Lillian McGill recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards for the District of Columbia.

The Mavericks will be back in action in the New Year's Classic on Sunday when they take on Columbia Union at 1 p.m.
