Newberry Takes Mercy College Women's Basketball with Strong Second Half, 85-46

NEWBERRY, SC - Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) registered her sixth consecutive double-double, scoring a career-high 23 points and grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds, but the Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 85-46 at Newberry College on Saturday. The Mavericks are now 2-8 on the year, while the Lady Indians improved to 8-3.

Reece connected on 10-of-21 from the field and was 3-for-7 at the free throw line, while picking up eight of her rebounds on the offensive end. Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) added 11 points for the Mavericks.

Newberry's Carnicha Bellinger tied Reece for a game-high in scoring with 23 points and added seven rebounds. Tonique Frasier registered a double-double for the Lady Indians, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 boards.

Newberry built an early 19-7 lead through the first nine minutes of the contest.  Mercy came back with a 19-6 run, capped by a jumper from Baxter, to take a 26-25 lead with 4:23 left in the first half, but the Lady Indians closed the frame with a 7-2 spurt to regain the lead and take a 32-28 advantage into the break.

The Newberry offense heated up in the second half, scoring the first seven points to stretch the lead to 39-28. The Mavericks were able to trim the deficit to eight at 41-33 on an Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) layup with 16:27 remaining, but the Lady Indians went on to outscore Mercy 44-13 from there to put it away.

The Mavericks will return to action on Sunday, December 30, when they play at Division I opponent North Carolina Central beginning at 2:00 p.m.
