Mavericks Fall at Felician in Non-Conference Women's Basketball, 67-61

RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 67-61 at Felician in a non-conference game on Saturday. Both squads are now 2-7 overall on the year.

Junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Mercy. Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) also netted 16 points and handed out six assists. Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) posted her fifth straight double-double, chipping in 10 points and pulling in 15 rebounds.

Felician's Dee Dee Smith led all players with 18 points and recorded a double-double by hauling in 12 boards. Janelle Biamonte added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Falcons.

The lead changed hands four times in the opening minutes before Mercy built a 14-6 gap by going on a 10-0 run, capped by a Steele three-pointer.  Steele's layup with 8:47 left in the first half gave the Mavericks a 13 point lead at 28-15, but Felician reeled off 10 straight points to pull within three at 28-25.  Mercy built the margin back to as many as seven before settling for a 39-34 lead at the break.

The Mavericks led by five again at 49-44 midway through the second half when Felician went on a 15-3 run to regain the advantage, 59-52, with 4:55 remaining in the contest.  The Golden Falcons stretched their lead to as many as eight on three occasions, the last with 40 seconds to go, 67-59.  A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Tracey Garnett (Ladyville, Belize) cut the margin to six, but the Mavericks could pull no closer.

Mercy will be off until Saturday, December 29, when they travel to take on Newberry, followed by another non-conference tilt against NCAA Division I program North Carolina Central on Sunday, December 30.
