Mavericks Clip Concordia 75-73 in ECC Women's Basketball Clash
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) recorded her third straight double-double with career-highs of 19 points and 23 rebounds, and junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) netted a game-high 21 points and handed out nine assists to lead the Mercy College women's basketball team to a 75-73 win over Concordia in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday.
Reece went 8-for-12 from the field, picked up five of her boards on the offensive glass, and also added three blocks. Baxter hit 8-of-14 from the floor and picked up three steals for the Mavericks as they improved to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in ECC action. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) chipped in 13 points, and freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) added 12 points.
Five players scored in double-digits for the Clippers (0-4, 0-8 ECC), led by junior center Shari Cordero (Bronx, NY) and sophomore forward Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY) who each netted 16 in defeat. Freshman center Amanda Eggink (Red Hook, NY) scored 12 points, while freshman guard Bonnie DeFina (Maspeth, NY) added 10, and sophomore guard Brittany Binnie (Middletown, NY) pitched in 10 to go with her nine assists.
The first seven minutes of the game saw the lead change hands six times before Mercy built a 33-22 advantage on a jumper by junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) with 6:35 left before the break. Concordia cut the deficit to eight at 37-29, but the Mavericks closed out the half with an 8-4 spurt, capped by a Baxter jumper with 1.6 seconds to go, and they took a 45-33 lead into the locker room.
The Clippers opened up the second frame by exploding for a 15-2 run, getting seven points from Rommel, to regain the lead at 48-47. Mercy responded with its own 18-6 outburst, with 10 points scored by Reece, as the Mavericks went back on top 65-54 with 10:21 remaining.
Concordia pulled within one point at 66-65, and again at 70-69, but a pair of free throws by Finnegan and a Reece layup gave Mercy a 74-69 margin with just over a minute left. Concordia would pull within two on a Cordero layup with two seconds to go, but would not get off another shot.
The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, December 12, when they travel to NYIT for another ECC tilt, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
