Mercy College Women's Basketball Downs Dowling 72-68 for First Win
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led four players in double-digits, scoring 22 points to lead the Mercy College women's basketball team to a 72-68 victory over visiting Dowling on Wednesday. It was the Mavericks first win of the season as they improved to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Golden Lions dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Baxter scored 13 of her 22 points in the second frame as she led a Mercy comeback after from a 37-32 half-time deficit. After Dowling stretched its lead to nine at 45-36 on a Molly Tubridy layup, the Mavericks chipped away and pulled two within two at 52-50 on a layup by freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY).
The Golden Lions then ran off six straight points, but Mercy erupted for a 19-6 outburst to pull ahead 69-64 with 1:45 remaining. The Mavericks would go on to put the game away on 3-of-4 at the free throw line from Baxter over the final 1:17.
Baxter hit 6-of-13 from the field for the game, netting 9-of-10 at the charity stripe, and added five assists and four steals in 34 minutes off the bench. Reece recorded her second straight double-double and third of the year, scoring 16 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) and junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) each posted 14 points and seven boards for the Mavericks.
Mikkeia Daniels led the Golden Lions with 22 points on 9-of-22 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the free throw line. Mirna Araujo chipped in 15 points and eight caroms.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, December 8, when they host Concordia in another ECC contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
