Mercy College Women's Basketball Falls at New Haven 103-81
WEST HAVEN, CT - Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) posted her second career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, but the Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 103-81 at the University of New Haven in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday. The Mavericks dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the ECC, while the Chargers improved to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in league action.
Reece was one of four Mavericks that scored double-digits. Junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) led the squad with 16 points and added six rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) added 15 points and eight boards, and junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) chipped in 11 points.
Down by eight early, Mercy exploded for a 15-0 run, getting a pair of three-pointers from Borofsky and five points from Baxter to build a 19-12 lead. New Haven chipped away until regaining the advantage at 27-26 with 9:37 to go in the half on a three-pointer by Nicole Pollard.
The contest saw two more lead changes and four ties from there, until the Chargers went ahead for good at 38-35 on another Pollard three-pointer at the 3:55 mark, and they would go into the break up 46-39.
The Mavericks cut into the deficit early in the second frame, pulling within two at 48-46 on a Sasha Bowen (Boston, MA) layup, but New Haven went on a 10-3 run, stretching the margin to 58-49. Mercy trailed by nine again with 11:50 remaining when the Chargers erupted for a 21-5 outburst that gave them an 88-63 lead and put the game out of reach.
Reece finished the game 7-of-12 from the field and also added three steals and a pair of assists. Steele connected on 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Borofsky netted 5-of-10 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from long distance.
New Haven's Lauren Hood led all players with 37 points on 14-of-18 from the field and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. Natasha Pierre-Louis added 15 points for the Chargers and Pollard finished with 14 points.
The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, December 5, when they host Dowling College in their home opener beginning at 6:00 p.m.
