Queens Holds Off Mercy College in ECC Women's Basketball Opener, 87-75

FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point half-time deficit, but Queens College held the Mavericks off down the stretch to take an 87-75 decision in both teams' East Coast Conference (ECC) opener on Wednesday.

Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led Mercy (0-4, 0-1 ECC) with 18 points. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) added 13 points for the Mavericks and freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) chipped in 11 points. Jessica Sanchez led all scorers with 25 points for Queens (2-2, 1-0 ECC), while Amanda Bartlett netted 19 points.

Mercy out-rebounded Queens by a margin of 51-42 for the game, but the Mavericks racked up 27 personal fouls, sending the Lady Knights to the free throw line 31 times, where they connected on 28 of their attempts (90.3 percent).

Trailing by nine at the break, 50-41, Mercy stepped up the pressure early in the second frame to pull ahead. The Mavericks led 61-60 when the Lady Knights scored seven straight points to regain the lead 67-61, an advantage they would not relinquish.

Mercy cut the deficit to four at 67-63, but again Queens ran off six straight points to cap a 13-2 run that resulted in a 73-63 lead.  The Mavericks would pull as close as seven two more times, the last on a Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) basket with 1:30 remaining in the contest, but Queens put the game away at the free throw line.

The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, December 1, when they travel to New Haven for another ECC tilt, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
