Mercy College Women's Basketball Edged by Nyack 68-65

NYACK, NY - Nyack College scored the last eight points to come from behind for a 68-65 decision over visiting Mercy College in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday. The Mavericks fall to 0-3 on the year, while Nyack improved to 1-2.

Freshman Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) registered her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for Mercy. Junior Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) also netted 14 points and pulled down eight boards to go with five assists, while freshman Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) chipped in 13 points.

Nyack led the entire first half, building an eight-point advantage at 25-17 with 6:30 left before the break.  Mercy ran off the next six points to cut the deficit to 25-23, but the Warriors answered with the next six points, before going into half-time with a 31-28 lead.

The Mavericks heated up early in the second frame, opening with a 19-9 run sparked by 12 point from Baxter to take their first lead and stretch it to 47-40 with 11:47 remaining in the game.  Mercy led by six at 57-51 after a jumper by Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA), but Nyack ran off seven straight points to regain the lead at 58-57.

Mercy answered with an 8-2 spurt, getting six points from Reece to pull back ahead by five at 65-60 with 1:51 to go when Nyack reeled off the final eight points to rally for the win. A three-pointer from Christy Porter put the Warriors ahead for good with 47 seconds to go and a jumper by Tamyra Lathon with 19 seconds left after a Mercy turnover sealed the game.

Reece hit 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line. Seven of her 11 boards came on the offensive end. Baxter connected on 7-of-15 from the floor, while Borofsky went 5-for-14, including 3-of-9 behind the arc.

Nyack's Kelsy McIntosh led all players with 17 points. Porter finished with 16 points and a game-high six assists for the Warriors.

The Mavericks play again on Wednesday, November 20, when they begin East Coast Conference (ECC) play at Queens College.
