Saint Michael's Tops Mercy College Women's Basketball 78-58 at DoubleTree Tip-Off Classic

COLCHESTER, VT - Junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) netted a game-high 20 points for the Mercy College women's basketball team, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks fell by a score of 78-58 to host Saint Michael's in the final game of the DoubleTree Tip-Off Classic on Sunday.

Steele hit 6-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-5 from three-point range, and went 6-for-8 at the free throw line. She also added two steals and two rebounds. Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) chipped in 12 points and dished out five assists, while sophomore forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) also pitched in 12 points for the Mavericks.

Mercy (0-2) jumped out to an early 13-6 lead as Steele and Baxter netted five quick points each, with DeVore adding a three-pointer.  The Mavericks led by seven again at 17-10 with 11:11 to go in the opening half when the Purple Knights went on a 10-2 run to take the lead, 20-19.  The lead changed hands four more times and with the contest knotted at 27-27, Saint Michael's closed out the half with another 13-4 spurt to take a 40-31 edge into the break.

The Mavericks pulled to within eight at 44-36 on a Steele Layup and a free throw with 16:24 remaining in the game, but Saint Michael's opened up a 17 point lead (55-38) midway through the second half.  Mercy made one more run at a comeback, cutting the margin to 10 at 55-45, but the Purple Knights responded again, this time with a 14-5 spurt to put the game out of reach.

Anna Florent led Saint Michael's with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Michelle Otey registered a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mavericks will be back in action again on Tuesday, November 20, when they travel to Nyack for another non-conference game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
