COLCHESTER, VT - The Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 74-61 decision to Franklin Pierce in the first game of the 2007-08 season on Saturday at the DoubleTree Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Saint Michael's College.
Three freshmen led the Mavericks, led by Delmara Reece's (Yonkers, NY) 17 points and game-high nine rebounds. Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) and Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) netted 12 points each and combined for three blocks and three steals.
Johannah Leedham poured in a game-high 30 points for Franklin Pierce, adding five steals and four assists. Jess McPherson contributed 11 points and five boards.
It was a tight game throughout, and with Franklin Pierce holding a 21-13 lead midway through the first half, Mercy went on a 9-1 run to tie it up at 22-22. The Ravens responded by outscoring the Mavericks 15-5 over the final 6:39 to take a 37-27 lead into the break.
Mercy cut the margin to four at 40-36 on a Finnegan jumper, but Franklin Pierce answered with another 12-4 run to pull back ahead 52-40 with 11:03 to go. The Mavericks chipped away one more time, closing the gap to five at 64-59 on a pair of Borofsky free throws, but the Ravens pulled away over the final 3:05 to seal the decision.
Reece hit 8-of-14 from the field, converting her only three-point attempt and added three blocks for Mercy. Borofsky went 4-for-6 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, and 2-of-3 at the charity stripe. Finnegan was 4-for-8 from the field and added eight boards.
The Mavericks will return to action on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. when they take on Saint Michael's.
