Mercy College Alumnus Noreen Annunziata Apicella to be Inducted into Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College alumnus Noreen Annunziata Apicella will be inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame on May 3 at the Pearl River Elks Club in Nanuet, New York. Annunziata Apicella will be a part of the 35th Hall of Fame class, which includes soccer standout Randy Nelson and multi-sport star Reid Hoffer.
Annunziata Apicella made her mark while a member of the Mercy College women's basketball team. She is currently ranked third all-time in scoring with 1527 points, sixth in steals with 254, seventh in assists with 331, and 13th in rebounding with 657. During her tenure at Mercy College (1983-1986) she helped complete some of the best teams in school history.
As a sophomore in the 1983-84 season, she earned All-State and All-Conference honors by averaging 16.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. She averaged 12.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as a junior. For her senior campaign, she averaged 13.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Annunziata Apicella was the first female basketball player to score 1,000 points in both high school (Pearl River) and college. According to the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, she is 16th all-time in scoring with 1,385 points scored (section one) while at Pearl River.
In order to be enshrined into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame, a candidate must meet the following criteria. First, the candidate must have attained prominence in sports as an athlete, coach, manager, official, owner, writer, broadcaster, or supporter. The candidate must have competed in Rockland County at the time of their prominence. The candidate must be a person of integrity and candidates cannot be considered for enshrinement until 10 years after their high school class graduation.
The Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame began its annual induction ceremony in 1974. Tickets for the dinner are $50 per person and can be purchased through Peter Castellano by calling 973-546-7200.
