Mercy Women's Basketball Ends Season with Loss to Bridgeport 88-71
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Mercy women's basketball team had four players score in double figures, but was defeated on Saturday at Bridgeport by a score of 88-71. The loss ends the Mavericks' season and is eliminated from conference tournament contention. Mercy finishes with an overall record of 6-21 and 6-14 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) notched her 14th double-double by scoring a team-high 16 points and snaring 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) hit five three-pointers and totaled 15 points and three assists. Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) netted 15 points and dished out four assists.
The Purple Knights (16-11, 13-7 ECC) began the game on an 8-2 run, but the Mavericks responded with a three-pointer by Baxter to cut the lead to three with 16:11 remaining. Bridgeport then went on another extended run (12-3) which was capped off by a Siobhan Moore jumper to give the Purple Knights a 20-8 lead.
The Mavericks picked up the pace and went on an 8-0 run with a jumper by freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) and back-to-back three-pointers by Borofsky and junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) to cut the lead to four (20-16) with 10:19 remaining in the half.
With 5:58 remaining, the Mavericks went on a 20-6 run to end the half, which was highlighted by trifectas from Borofsky, Steele and sophomore forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT). Mercy went into the locker room ahead 41-33.
Leading by just three points with 15:50 remaining in the second half, Borofsky hit another shot from behind the arc to give the Mavericks some breathing room at 48-42. However, the Purple Knights scored the next eight points to go take the lead 50-48. With the score tied at 50, Bridgeport went on a 20-6 run of their own to go up 70-56.
The Mavericks cut the lead to nine with 4:15 remaining when DeVore hit a three-pointer. However, the Purple Knights kept the heat on, as they shot 60.6 percent from the floor in the second half, and closed out the game.
Sidney Parsons led all scorers with 18 points and had six assists. Shannon Malone scored 16 points and grabbed nine boards.
The Purple Knights out rebounded Mercy 38 to 34. Bridgeport shot 54.8 percent from the field for the entire game.
Baxter finished out the season as Mercy's leading scorer with 15.7 points per game. Reece averaged a double-double in her first season with 13 points per game and 12.3 rebounds. Finnegan was third in scoring with 11.1 points per game and 7.6 boards.
