C.W. Post Defeats Mercy Women's Basketball 83-57

BROOKVILLE, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 83-57 at the hands of host C.W. Post in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game on Wednesday.  The Mavericks are now 6-20 overall, and 6-13 in ECC play, while the Pioneers improved to 16-10 overall and 13-6 in the league.

Junior guard Christina Baxter (Tuxedo, NY) poured in a game-high 25 points for the Mavericks on 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) and junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) added 11 points each.

C.W. Post scored the first 12 points of the contest, getting eight points from Gina Catherall, and stretched its early lead to 15-2 on a three-pointer from Jasmine Moore.  The Mavericks responded with seven straight points, all from Baxter to trim the deficit to 15-9.

Mercy pulled within five (18-13) on a pair of Steele free throws, but the Pioneers answered with a 9-2 spurt, regaining momentum and building a 27-15 margin.  They would stretch the gap to as many as 15 (40-25) in the first half, before taking a 42-28 lead into the break.

The Mavericks were able to cut the lead to nine points twice in the second frame, the last (50-41) with 13:05 remaining on a Reece layup. The margin was too much to overcome and C.W. Post closed it out by outscoring Mercy 33-16 over the final 12:42.

Four C.W. Post players scored in double-digits, led by Catherall's 23 points. Moore posted a double-double for the Pioneers with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Whitney Murrer also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

The Mavericks will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 1, when they travel to Bridgeport for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
