Mavericks Drop Non-Conference Game to Caldwell 80-67
CALDWELL, NJ – The Mercy College
women’s basketball team was defeated on Wednesday night in
non-conference action at Caldwell College by a score of 80-67. The
loss drops Mercy’s record to 6-18 overall and remains 6-11 in
East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Sophomore forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT)
scored a season-high 20 points, including 4-of-7 from downtown, and
grabbed eight rebounds. Junior guard Christina Baxter
(Greenwood Lake, NY) registered 15 points and dished out
three assists. Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester,
MA) chipped in with 10 points and eight boards.
Caldwell (16-9) came out of the gates quickly and built up a 20-9
lead with 14:42 remaining in the first half. Moments later,
Stephanie Cadet hit a shot from downtown to build the deficit up to
15 (25-10). However, the Mavericks regrouped and stopped the lead
from getting much larger.
In the final minute of the first half, the Mavericks capitalized
on a turnover and DeVore drained a three-pointer to go into the
locker room trailing 47-33.
The Mavericks came out in the second half a little bit more
aggressive on both sides of the ball and were able to get to the
line 16 times (making 12). Baxter led the charge and converted on a
lay-up to cut the lead to 10 (50-40) with 16:20 remaining.
The junior guard kept the Mavericks focused and again connected on
a lay-up, further cutting into the Cougars’ lead. Down only
by seven points now, the Cougars looked to regain the momentum.
First, Phylicia Holmes penetrated the lane for an easy deuce and
then Mackenzie Lynch got into the paint, made the bucket and
converted a free throw to complete the three-point play to bring
the deficit back up to 13 with 3:33 remaining in the game.
The Mavericks did not hit another shot from the field as they shot
37 percent in the second half.
Lynch recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. She
was 10-for-11 at the charity stripe. Holmes led the Cougars in
scoring with 15 points and grabbed nine caroms.
The Cougars held the edge in rebounding 47 to 40. Mercy outscored
Caldwell 34 to 33 in the second half. Freshman forward
Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) added seven points and
nine rebounds for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, February 23 when
they travel to play St. Thomas Aquinas College at 1 p.m.
