Molloy Tops Mercy Women's Basketball 79-47

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by Molloy College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 79-47. The loss drops Mercy's record to 6-17 overall and 6-11 in the East Coast Conference (ECC).

Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) scored eight points and nabbed six boards. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) also scored eight points and shot 2-of-3 from downtown.

The Lady Lions (13-11, 10-7 ECC) began the game on a 10-0 run which was capped off with a three-pointer by Jenna McLaughlin. However, Mercy came back and cut the deficit to eight (20-12) on the strength of a Reece lay-up.

Molloy responded by going on another long run (14-4) and extended its lead to 21 points. Kymira Woodberry scored four of her 15 points for the game during that stretch. Then with 40 seconds remaining, freshman center Courtney Cochran (Wilmington, DE) converted a three-point play by nailing a jumper and making the free throw to go into halftime trailing 40-24.

In the second half, the Mavericks cut the lead to 12 points (49-37) with 14:53 remaining when sophomore forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) drained a jumper with a defender in her face.

However, the Lady Lions kept the heat on by hitting back-to-back three pointers by Randi Bender to extend the lead to 21 with 6:41 remaining. Bender hit one more trifecta with 4:19 to push the score up to 66-43.

Bender led the Lions with 21 points, including 6-of-10 from downtown, and dished out four assists. Woodberry had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

The Mavericks were out rebounded 52 to 26. Both teams committed 19 turnovers.

Mercy will be back in action when they travel to take on Caldwell in a non-conference game on Wednesday, February 20, at 6 p.m.
