Baxter Nets 30, but Mavericks Drop 73-60 Decision at Adelphi
GARDEN CITY, NY - Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) poured in a career and game-high 30 points and dished out five assists, but the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 73-60 decision at the hands of host Adelphi on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 6-16 overall and 6-10 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Baxter converted 11 of her 21 field goal attempts, went 7-for-9 at the free throw line, and also picked up three steals. Freshman Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) added nine points, while freshman Delmara Reese (Yonkers, NY) registered a team-high 11 rebounds and scored six points.
Mercy held a 5-2 edge early on after a pair of free throws from freshman Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA), but a three-pointer by Lisa Manetta tied the game and started a 13-4 run that gave Adelphi a 15-9 lead six minutes in.
The Panthers (11-11, 9-6 ECC) led 20-15 with just under nine minutes left in the opening half when the Mavericks went on an 8-2 spurt, getting four points apiece from Baxter and junior Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) to regain the edge at 23-22.
Adelphi responded by scoring the next six points to pull ahead again, and then closed out the half with another 9-5 spurt to take a 38-33 margin into the break.
Mercy cut the deficit to one at 40-39 on a Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) jumper two minutes into the second stanza, but the Panthers put together a 12-3 run to mount a double-digit lead, 52-42. Steele converted a jumper to trim the margin to 52-44, but that would be as close as the Mavericks could pull the rest of the way.
The Panthers out-rebounded Mercy by a 50-37 margin, while shooting 41.4 percent from the field and holding the Mavericks to 35 percent.
Gianna Smith and Serita Lee each registered double-doubles for Adelphi. Smith netted 20 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, while Lee chipped in 12 points and added 10 boards. Mary LePore finished with a team-high 21 points for the Panthers, hitting 5-of-10 attempts behind the arc.
The Mavericks will be back in action again on Saturday, February 16, when they host Molloy in their final home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Dobbs Ferry High School.
