Mercy Athletics "Think Pink" Day Raises Awareness and Funds for Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund
DOBBS FERRY, NY - More than 200 fans, student-athletes, parents, coaches, staff, and friends of Mercy College Athletics took part in Saturday's "Think Pink" campaign. The effort also brought in $150 in donations to benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
"Our ‘Think Pink' day really brings awareness to breast cancer and all of the tremendous efforts in the fight against cancer," said head women's basketball coach Ashlee Kelly. "It gave all of our student-athletes and fans a wonderful opportunity to be a part of something bigger than basketball. It was truly a special and I was really proud to be part of this event."
The Mercy College women's basketball team donned pink t-shirts during warm-ups and also wore pink shoelaces and scrunchies during the game. The coaching staff, administrators, and table staff wore pink shirts, ties, and/or ribbons. The men's basketball team also sported pink shoelaces during their game in a show of support.
Many fans attended in pink t-shirts and all that made a donation of $2 or more to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund were admitted to the game free. They received giveaways such as pink t-shirts, beaded necklaces, breast cancer awareness hats and knapsacks, which were donated by Ken Keenan of New Balance - Tampa, FL.
