Mercy College Women's Basketball Falls to NYIT, 67-60
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on Saturday by a score of 67-60. The Mavericks' record falls to 6-15 overall and 6-9 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led all scorers with 21 points and dished out seven assists. Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) picked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) added 15 points by shooting 7-for-16 from the floor.
The two teams jockeyed back-and-forth until the Mavericks went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-12 lead on the strength of a Baxter three-pointer. The Bears (5-16, 3-11 ECC) then cut the lead to four (24-20) when Sarah Vivonetto nailed a jumper with 4:55 remaining.
However, the Mavericks came right back and re-extended the lead to eight (28-20) on a jumper by sophomore forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) with 3:18 remaining. The Bears cut the lead to one when Brittany Almonte drained a shot from downtown with 25 seconds left in the half. Mercy went into the locker room leading 32-31.
The Bears carried its momentum into the second half as Brittany Smith nailed a jumper to tie the game at 39 with 15:01 remaining. NYIT scored the next seven points with Madison Robertson's three-pointer capping off the run.
The Mavericks then went on a 9-2 run to re-take the lead (50-48) on an Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) trifecta.
The scored remained close until Robertson hit a jumper to give the Bears a 62-55 lead with 4:25 remaining. The Mavericks only got within five points of the lead as the Bears closed out the game with free throws.
Lauren Caggiano led the Bears in scoring with 13 points and also grabbed eight caroms. Nicole Matthews recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.
The Bears out rebounded the Mavericks 44 to 37. Mercy had 10 steals to NYIT's seven.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to Adelphi on Wednesday.
