Mavericks Stumble on the Road Against Dowling 69-56

OAKDALE, NY – Four players scored in double digits for the Mercy College women’s basketball team, but it wasn’t enough as Dowling defeated the Mavericks by a score of 69-56 on Saturday. The Mavericks’ record falls to 5-14 overall and 5-8 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.

Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led Mercy in scoring with 15 points and three assists. Sophomore forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) collected her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) chipped in with 10 points and nine boards.

The Golden Lions started the game on a 14-4 run capped off by a Nikkeia Daniels lay-up. But the Mavericks stormed back, and with 7:08 remaining cut the deficit to three on a jumper by Baxter.

Dowling kept the pressure on the Mavericks and extended the lead back to eight on a buzzer beater from downtown by Mirna Araujo. The Mavericks went into the locker room trailing 39-31.

In the second half, Dowling turned up the heat and shot 42.9 percent from the floor and quickly built its lead to 10 with 18:26 remaining on a jumper by Molly Tubridy. Moments later the Mavericks were able to cut the lead to seven (43-36) on a lay-up by freshman forward Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT). But that’s as close as Mercy would get.

The Golden Lions went on a 23-6 run over the next 5:46 to build a commanding 17-point lead. Tubridy connected on a lay-up to cap off the run.

Dowling held the edge in rebounding 38-35. The Mavericks were 4-for-19 from behind the arc and 6-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Mavericks. Borofsky added eight points and hit two three-pointers.

Tubridy led the Golden Lions in scoring with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Daniels scored 13 points and grabbed nine boards in just 24 minutes of action.

The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play Concordia on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
