Mercy falls to conference rival Queens College 83-69
DOBBS FERRY - Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) scored 20 points and dished out nine assists in a losing effort as the Mavericks fell to Queens College by a score of 83-69 on Saturday. Mercy's record falls to 5-12 overall and 5-6 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Freshman forward Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) chipped in with 17 points and hit three shots from downtown.
Borofsky got the Maverick offense going early in the first half when she hit her first three-pointer of the game to give Mercy a 12-7 lead with 14:41 remaining. Shortly after, Amanda Bartlett heated up for Queens (8-10, 6-5 ECC) as she hit on all 11 free throw attempts in the half. As a team the Knights hit all 15 free throw attempts in the first half.
With 1:11 remaining in the first half, Rachel Primm hit a three-pointer to give the Knights a 44-35 lead. The Mavericks went into the locker room trailing 46-37.
Early in the second half Mercy got within seven points on the strength of junior guard Jazmin Steele's (Stoughton, MA) jumper and a tough drive by Baxter for the bucket and the foul to cut the lead to 49-42. However, the Knights kept the pressure on as Bartlett nailed a trifecta to extend the lead to 15 with 13:22 remaining.
Borofsky stole the ball from Primm with 4:14 remaining and was fouled as she went up for a lay-up on the other end. Borofsky hit both free throws to bring the Mavericks within eight by a score of 76-68. But that's as close as Mercy would get as the Knights extended its lead on the strength of a Bartlett lay-up and her final two free throws. She finished with 37 points and was 16-of-21 from the charity stripe.
Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Queens edged Mercy in rebounding 48 to 47. Neither team shot well from beyond the arc with Mercy shooting 3-for-17 and Queens 4-for-25.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday at The Masters School against New Haven at 6 p.m.
