Mavericks Come Up Short Against Bridgeport 69-58
DOBBS FERRY - Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led the Mavericks with 18 points, five assists and six steals, but it was not enough as Mercy fell to Bridgeport by a score of 69-58 on Wednesday. The Maverick's record dropped to 5-11 overall and 5-5 in the East Coast Conference (ECC).
Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) recorded her eleventh double-double by scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) scored 12 points and nabbed six boards.
The game was tight early on, but the Purple Knights (9-8 overall, 6-4 ECC) went on an 8-0 run to gain a 10 point lead (26-16) capped off by a lay-up by senior forward Linda Durmen Blunt. However, the Mavericks responded promptly with back-to-back Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) three-pointers to cut the lead to 26-22.
With just 27 seconds remaining in the half, Baxter penetrated the lane and connected on a lay-up to send the Mavericks into the locker room down 34-30.
Mercy came out of the gate quickly by nailing consecutive jumpers by Baxter and then Finnegan to tie the game at 34. The Purple Knights then went on their second big run of the game, 10-4, capped off by a Shannon Malone jumper to put Bridgeport up 52-40.
The Purple Knights would extend its lead to 17 before the Mavericks were able to cut into it with five Baxter free throws and two trifectas. With Bridgeport leading by a score of 60-54, they gave the ball back to Malone who made two big buckets down the stretch for four of her game-high 28 points.
Borofsky scored nine points and collected four rebounds.
Junior center Siobhan Moore scored 16 points in 16 minutes of action for the Purple Knights. Bridgeport edged Mercy in rebounding 45 to 41.
