Mavericks Pick Off Pioneers in Overtime 69-66
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team upset C.W. Post in overtime on Saturday by a score of 69-66. Mercy improved its record to 5-10 overall and 5-4 in the East Coast Conference (ECC).
The Mavericks had four players score in double digits with freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) leading the way with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Reece picked up her tenth double-double of the season. Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) also picked up a double-double by scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) hit 5-of-11 from behind the arc and scored 15 points.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team holding a lead greater than seven. The Pioneers (10-6 overall, 7-2 ECC) were lights out from downtown hitting 9-of-17 shots. But the Mavericks were able to stay close due to some strong play in the paint.
With 11:41 remaining in the second half, the Mavericks went up by four on the strength of a Reece lay-up by a score of 46-41. However, the Pioneers once again came back and took the lead by the score of 47-46 on a jump shot by forward Whitney Murrer.
With Mercy down 58-53 with 4:30 remaining the offense started to heat up with a jumper by Reece and then junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) drove the lane, got fouled and hit both of her free throws to tie the game at 58.
The Pioneers had the ball with 28.8 seconds remaining, the score tied at 60 and a chance to take the lead. However, Pioneers guard Gina Catherall missed on her three-point attempt giving the ball back to the Mavericks with 21 seconds left and an opportunity to win the game.
Baxter brought the ball up with Catherall guarding her. She drove the lane, but missed on a fade away jumper to inevitably send the game into overtime.
The Mavericks came out firing in the extra session with Borofsky connecting on a three, but the Pioneers fought right back and took the lead on a Murrer lay-up with 1:16 remaining by a score of 66-65. After a steal by Borofsky, Finnegan got in the lane and connected on a lay-up to regain the lead for good by a score of 67-66 with just 45 seconds left.
Guard Emily Hall connected on 4-of-8 from downtown and scored 16 points. Murrer recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Mercy remains unbeaten at home sporting a 5-0 record.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday at the Masters School against Bridgeport at 6:00 p.m. It will be "Make-A-Wish Wednesday", as all fans that make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the gate will receive free admission.
