Mercy College Women's Basketball Trips Up Spartans 68-56

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College by a score of 68-56 on Tuesday. The Mavericks are now 4-10 overall and 4-4 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.

Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led the way with a team-high 18 points and chipped in seven assists. Freshman guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) was 3-of-6 from behind the arc and finished with 17 points. Freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) recorded her ninth double-double by scoring 16 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.

Both teams had sluggish first halves with Mercy holding St. Thomas Aquinas (6-8 overall, 5-2 ECC) to 21 percent from the floor. With 6:23 remaining in the first half, Mercy had built a 24-8 lead with Borofsky netting nine points. The Spartans climbed back in the game with two three-pointers by guard Kaitlin Page. Mercy led at the half 30-19.

In the second half, the Spartans chipped away and tied the game at 40 with 11:06 remaining, but the Mavericks scored the next six points, capped by a Borofsky trifecta. St. Thomas Aquinas didn't relent and closed the gap to two at 50-48, however; junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) nailed a three to extend the lead back to five with 3:50 remaining.

The Mavericks kept the momentum with another three-pointer from Borofsky and then with 55 seconds remaining Reece iced the game with a jumper to make the score 58-53. Baxter made five free throws in the closing seconds to put the game away.

Mercy shot 40 percent from the field while holding St. Thomas Aquinas to 30 percent. The Mavericks also dominated the boards, out rebounding the Spartans 56 to 35.

Senior guard Takiyah Ingram led all scorers with 23 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. The Mavericks will travel to Sparkill, NY to play the Spartans again at the end of February.

The Mavericks are back in action on Saturday at home against C.W. Post at 1:00 p.m. The Mercy College men's and women's basketball teams will hold a FREE youth clinic for boys and girls ages 6 - 11 on Saturday, prior to their doubleheader versus C.W. Post. The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All children in attendance will receive complimentary admission to the Mavericks' doubleheader, and will be invited to play on the court at half-time of each game.
