Mercy College Women's Basketball Stopped at Molloy 87-44
ROCKVILLE CENTER, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 87-44 at host Molloy on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 3-10 overall and 3-4 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. Molloy improved to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Freshman forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) highlighted the night for Mercy, scoring 13 points and picking up eight rebounds. She hit 6-of-12 from the field and netted her only free throw attempt. Junior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) added 11 points and five boards, and freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) chipped in eight points and tied for a game-high with 12 rebounds.
Molloy's Kymira Woodberry recorded a double-double, leading all scorers with 23 points and tied Reece with 12 caroms. Brittany Jones added 11 points for the Lady Lions, while E.J. Dreyer and Randi Bender chipped in 10 points each.
Molloy raced out to a 34-8 lead over the first 12:43 of the contest, getting 12 points from Woodberry and eight from Bender. Junior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) then hit a three-pointer for Mercy and Baxter followed with a layup, cutting the deficit to 34-13, but the Lady Lions outscored the Mavericks 14-8 to close out the half and build a 48-21 margin at the break.
The Mavericks were unable to heat up on offense in the second frame as Molloy held them to 9-of-36 from the field over the final 20 minutes. After an early Baxter layup brought the score to 50-24, the Lady Lions went on a 19-4 run to put the game out of reach.
The Mavericks are off for six days before returning to the court on Tuesday, January 15, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Dobbs Ferry High School. The Mercy College athletics department will be collecting used cell phones to be recycled, with funds generated from donations to benefit the Sunshine Lady Child Care Center at Mercy's Bronx Campus. All fans that donate a used cell phone will receive free admission.
