Mercy's Christina Baxter Named to PrestoSports/MBWA Weekly Honor Roll
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College women's basketball player Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY/Tuxedo) has been named to this week's PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Honor Roll. Baxter was one of five players to receive the honor, while Epiphanny Prince of Rutgers was named Player of the Week.
Baxter, a 5-foot-6 sophomore guard, averaged 16.0 points, 2.5 steals, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in two outings for Mercy last week. She shot 48 percent from the field, including 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from three-point range, and hit 80 percent at the free throw line.
In a 61-49 defeat at East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Adelphi on Wednesday, Baxter netted 15 points and tied for a game-high with three steals. She followed up by dropping in 17 points on Saturday, going 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-for-3 beyond the arc, in an 82-50 loss to American International College, ranked No. 21 in the nation.
Last year's conference Rookie of the Year, Baxter is currently averaging 9.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and a team-best 2.4 assists per contest this season.
Mercy is currently 2-6 overall and 1-3 in ECC play. The Flyers will be back in action again on Sunday, January 7, at Briarcliffe, before resuming ECC action the next night at the Westchester County Center versus Concordia.
About the PrestoSports/MBWA Weekly Player of the Week Award
Founded for the 2004-05 season, the Player of the Week Award is granted on a weekly basis by the New York Area Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. Each week, each of the nearly 75 schools that play college basketball in the Tri-state area have the ability to nominate one male and one female student-athlete, based upon their on-court accomplishments over the previous seven days. An esteemed panel of eight media members votes to select from the nominations the most outstanding player. Any player who receives any votes, but are not named the Player of the Week, are then named to the Honor Roll.
