Mercy Women's Basketball Falls to Adelphi 61-49

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 61-49 at Adelphi, on Wednesday, December 13. Mercy's record is now 2-5 overall and 1-3 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Panthers improved to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Sophomore guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) was one of two Flyers to finish the contest in double digits. She netted 15 points, including going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Junior guard Precious Tyler (Brooklyn, NY) recorded 10 points for Mercy, connecting on 3-of-5 field goal attempts.
Adelphi opened the game by going on a 14-3 run. The Flyers got back on track and at the 9:24 mark Baxter nailed a jumper, cutting the lead to three points, before scoring seven of the next nine points for Mercy. At 3:58, Baxter hit a three-pointer to give Mercy its first lead of the contest, 28-27. However, Adelphi was able to hit some key baskets in the closing minutes of the half to go into the break up 36-32.
The Panthers added to their lead, stretching the margin to 17 points at 53-36 midway through the second half. Mercy was able to cut the deficit to 12 with 2:24 left on an Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, NY) free throw, but the Panthers put the game away down the stretch.
Junior guard Jasmine Sistrunk (Brooklyn, NY) had nine points for Mercy, while going 3-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the foul line. Freshman forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) led Mercy in the rebound category, grabbing seven. Gianna Smith led all scorers with 19 points, while Lisa Manetta recorded 10 points for the Panthers. Serita Lee had a game high eight rebounds.
The Flyers will travel to American International College on Saturday, December 16. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
