Sistrunk and Tyler Lead Mercy Women's Basketball Past NYIT 57-45 for First Conference Victory Since 2004
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Mercy College women's basketball team defeated NYIT 57-45, on Saturday, December 9. The win was the Flyers' first over a conference opponent since February 28, 2004, at Bridgeport (62-60). With the win Mercy's record improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Bears fell to 2-5 and 1-2 in the league.
Junior guards Jasmine Sistrunk (Brooklyn, NY) and Precious Tyler (Brooklyn, NY) each recorded a double-double on the afternoon. Sistrunk finished the game with 13 points and hauled in a game-high 17 rebounds for Mercy. Tyler finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
NYIT opened the game by going on a 7-0 run, with Mercy committing eight early turnovers. The Flyers got back on track and were able to tie and take the lead in the contest 15-14, on a pair of free throws from graduate student Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, NY). With 20 seconds left in the half, the Bears came back down court and were able to regain the lead on an Emily Bolling (Palmer, AK) layup. Mercy hustled down the court and with time expiring Sistrunk nailed a three-point basket that put the Flyers up 18-16 at the break.
The Bears came out of the locker room by going on a 6-0 run to take a 22-18 lead, but the Flyers battled back to tie the game at 26-26 with 14:20 left. NYIT answered by scoring the next six points, regaining the edge at 31-26, before Mercy responded with another 8-1 spurt to pull ahead 33-32 on a Tyler layup with 10:55 to go.
NYIT tied the contest once more at 34-34 on a pair of free throws from Brittany Smith (Amityville, NY), but Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) converted a layup that began a Flyers' closing run of 23-11.
Krossber lead the way in the scoring department for Mercy, recording a game-high 19 points, including a 9-of-10 effort from the charity stripe. Steele finished the contest going 4-of-8 from the field, collecting 12 points. Smith led NYIT with 10 points, while Bolling recorded nine rebounds for the Bears.
The Flyers will travel to ECC opponent Adelphi on Wednesday, December 13. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
