Dowling Tops Mercy Women's Basketball 62-42
OAKDALE, NY- The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 62-42, to Dowling College on Saturday, December 2. The Flyers are now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in ECC play, while Dowling improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the league. Graduate student Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, NY) led Mercy with 11 points.
The Golden Lions put the first points on the board, when Kristina Mitchell (Streamwood, IL) hit a three-point basket, one of five in the contest. Mercy's first points in the contest came on the next play when junior guard, Precious Tyler (Brooklyn, NY) converted on two free throws.
Dowling then went on a 9-2 run, capped by another three-pointer from Mitchell, giving the Golden Lions a 12-4 lead. Krossber, a 5-foot-9 guard, hit a three-pointer to help the Flyers get within four points and Tyler converted on a layup at the seven-minute to make the score 12-10 in favor of the Golden Lions. Dowling then put together another 10-3 run and went into the locker room up 22-13.
Sophomore guard, Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA), made a layup as Mercy started the second half by scoring four straight points to cut the Golden Lion's lead to only five. Once again Dowling answered again though, this time with a 14-4 spurt, extending the margin to 15 at 36-21.
Mercy was able to trim the deficit to 12 on two occasions, the last on another Steele layup with 4:44 remaining, but the Golden Lions put the contest away down the stretch.
Krossber went 4-of-10 from the field, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Steele was 4-for-9 from the field, scoring nine points, and collected five steals. Tyler led the Flyers in the rebound category, pulling down nine. Mitchell led all players with 17 points for Dowling. Teammate Natasha Page (Queens, NY) led all players with 12 rebounds.
The Flyers will host NYIT on Saturday, December 9. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
