WHITE PLAINS, NY- The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 85-60, to the University of New Haven on Thursday, November 30.  It was each team's first East Coast Conference (ECC) contest of the season.  The Flyers are now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in ECC play, while New Haven improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.  Junior guard Jasmine Sistrunk (Brooklyn, NY) led Mercy with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Mercy scored first in the contest when ECC Rookie of the Week, Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT), hit one of two free throws.  New Haven then went on a 13-6 run, capped by a layup and a free throw from Ashley Hilton, giving the Chargers a 13-7 lead.

The Flyers battled back, regaining the lead at the 8:24 mark when Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) converted two free throws, and built an 18-14 margin on another Baxter layup.

The lead changed hands again though, as New Haven responded by going on a 13-3 spurt that put the Chargers ahead 27-21 with 4:16 left in the first half.  Mercy tied the contest one more time at 32-32 after a three-pointer from Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, NY) and a layup from Tannyka Bent (Queens, NY).  A pair of free throws from Lindsay Salt just before the break gave the Chargers a 34-32 edge going into the lockerroom.

New Haven stretched its lead to 43-34 early in the second half, before Mercy made one more 10-2 run, getting four points from Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA), that cut the deficit to one at 45-44, with 14:57 left in the game but the Flyers could not pull closer. Mercy kept within striking distance for the next seven minutes until the Chargers sealed the game by outscoring the Flyers 30-10, over the final 7:27.

Sistrunk was 6-for-12 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free throw line.  Krossber finished with 12 points and added seven rebounds, while Precious Tyler (Brooklyn, NY) chipped in 11 points.  Alanna Zahora led all players with 17 points for New Haven, also grabbing 10 boards.  Teammate Alysia Saunders led all players with 11 rebounds.
