Mercy College Women's Basketball Triumphs 81-72 at Medgar Evers, Stops Streak

BROOKLYN, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team stormed from behind for an 81-72 win over host Medgar Evers on Monday, November 20.  The victory ended the Flyers' losing streak at 52 straight, as they improved to 1-2 on the year.  Medgar Evers is now 0-3.

Graduate student Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, NY) paced the Mercy offense, pouring in a team-high 19 points. Freshman forward Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) exploded for 18 points and 12 rebounds, notching her first career double-double.  Junior guard Jasmine Sistrunk (Brooklyn, NY) also registered her first double-double as a Flyer, netting 17 points and hauling in a team-high 15 boards. Sophomore guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) added 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Mercy trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but chipped away and rallied back. The Flyers took a 54-51 lead early in the second frame that they would not relinquish.

Krossber connected on 6-of-11 from the field, including 3-for-6 from three-point range.  DeVore went 7-for-16 from the floor and Sistrunk hit 6-of-10, as the Flyers shot 40 percent as a team.  Mercy forced 20 turnovers in the contest.

Mercy had gone 0-25 over each of the last two years.  The program's last win came in the final game of the 2003-04 season, a 62-60 decision at Bridgeport on February 28, 2004.

"We played tough down the stretch and pulled it out," said first year head coach Ashlee Kelly. "It feels good to get that first win and I'm very happy for the girls who have been a part of this program over the last few years. Now we'll hopefully use this win to build for many more to come."

The Flyers will be back in action on Thursday, November 30, when they host New Haven in their home and East Coast Conference (ECC) opener at the Westchester County Center. Tip-off is at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by the Mercy men's basketball game, also versus New Haven, at 7:00 p.m.
