Mercy Women's Basketball Team Defeated 72-44, by Assumption in Season Opener
WORCESTER, MA- The Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 72-44, to host Assumption on Wednesday, November 15. It was each team's first contest of the season. Sophomore guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) and junior guard Jasmine Sistrunk (Brooklyn, NY) led Mercy with 10 points each.
Mercy scored the first basket of the game on a Sistrunk lay-up, but Assumption then went on a 10-0 run to take control. The Greyhounds would go on to stretch their lead to 38-13 on a Beth Plasski (Fall River, MA) three-pointer with 2:31 left in the first half. Mercy cut the deficit to 40-19 on a pair of Elissa Krossber (Canandaigua, NY) free throws, and got another layup from Krossber just before the break as Assumption went into the second half ahead 44-23.
Freshman Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) opened the second stanza with a three-pointer for the Flyers, and hit another from beyond the arc at the 14:08 mark to pull Mercy within 19. Assumption then went on another 17-7 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 67-38, and put the contest away.
"We played hard, I was very proud of my girls tonight and each game is a stepping stone for the future," said head coach Ashlee Kelly. "We will work hard at practice tomorrow and be ready for Friday."
Sistrunk was 5-for-8 from the field and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Mercy, while Baxter hit 5-of-11 from the field and grabbed five boards. Plasski led all players with 20 points for Assumption.
The Flyers will travel to UMass Lowell on Friday, November 17. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
