Panthers Take Mavericks in Three Sets
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's
volleyball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC)
opponent Adelphi University by a score of 3-0 on Thursday.
The Mavericks (6-19, 1-11 ECC) jumped out to a 5-2 lead after a
kill by junior middle blocker Ashley Zufelt (Farmington,
NM). The Panthers (20-7, 9-3 ECC) tied the set up at eight
on an ace by Samantha Johnston. With Mercy leading 19-18, sophomore
middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica)
connected on a strong kill down the right side. However, the
Panthers fought back and evened the score at 24. Led by Johnston,
Adelphi scored the next two points to take the set 26-24.
The Panthers took a 7-3 lead in set two on the strength of a kill
by Kathleen Carney. Adelphi widened its lead to 14-5 on
back-to-back aces by Carney. The Mavericks rallied for a few
points, but Adelphi won set two 25-12.
In the final set the Panthers got out in front 11-4 after a kill by
Johnston. Adelphi put the set out of reach with three aces by
Heather Mau. The Panthers took set three 25-11.
Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil,
Ecuador) collected 12 digs, while sophomore middle hitter
Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru) notched 11 digs.
Hamilton and Zufelt each added five kills.
Johnston had nine kills on 25 attempts for the Panthers.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, October
28 when they travel to Bronxville to play Concordia.
