Mercy Volleyball Defeated in Non-Conference Match by St. Rose, 3-1
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's
volleyball team was defeated in a tight battle by non-conference
competitor St. Rose by a score of 3-1 on Monday.
Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil,
Ecuador) recorded 15 kills and 19 digs for the Mavericks.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica) notched 10 kills on 21 attempts for a .333
hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Bridgette
Pennelle (Hawthorne, NY) added 12 digs, while senior
setter Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) had 11
digs and 27 assists.
The Mavericks (6-16) trailed in the first set 10-6 after an ace by
freshman Theresa Staulo. However, Mercy trimmed the gap on a kill
down the right side by Hamilton. The Golden Knights (11-5)
responded with an ace by Mary German and a kill by Marilyn Glamack
to put the set out of reach. St. Rose took set one 25-19.

In the second set, the Mavericks jumped out to a big lead (11-2)
on eight straight points by Bruzzone, including three service aces.
The Golden Knights staged a comeback with a flurry of kills by
Glamack and evened the score at 24. Junior middle blocker
Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, NM) gave the Mavericks
back the lead with a well-placed tap 25-24 and ultimately the set
(27-25).
After Mercy took a 9-6 lead in the third set on a St. Rose hitting
error, the Golden Knights again knotted the score up at 10. Junior
middle hitter Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) gave the
Mavericks back the lead with a smash into the left corner at 14-13.
The Golden Knights responded with back-to-back kills by Glamack to
take a two point lead. St. Rose put the set away with an ace by
German. The Golden Knights won set three 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Mavericks fell behind 14-7 but stormed back
on the strength of three consecutive Bruzzone kills to cut the
deficit to two. Mercy tied the score at 16 on a hitting error by
St. Rose, but could not grab the lead. The Golden Knights scored
seven of the next nine points to take the set 25-18.
Glamack had 11 kills and 13 digs for the Golden Knights.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday, October 16 when
they play host to Queens College at 7:00 p.m.
