West Chester Tops Mavericks in Five Sets
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College women's volleyball team was defeated in five sets by
West Chester on Saturday.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica) recorded 12 kills on 30 attempts for the
Mavericks. Junior middle hitter Sasha Atkins (Bronx,
NY) notched eight kills on 21 attempts, while senior
setter Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica)
contributed with 31 assists.
After trailing 6-1 in the first set, Mercy (6-15) came back to tie
the score at 11 on the strength of freshman Bridgette
Pennelle's (Hawthorne, NY) kill down the right side. Mercy
took the lead on back-to-back kills by Atkins and went on to win
25-16.
In the second set, West Chester (16-6) took an early lead, but the
Mavericks tied the score at 13 and then went ahead on a kill by
Hamilton. Mercy put the set away on three consecutive kills by
junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil,
Ecuador). The Mavericks took set two 25-16.
The momentum shifted in the third set when the Golden Rams went up
16-5 after two aces by Kellie Brumbaugh. West Chester took the set
25-9. In the fourth set the Golden Rams led big on the strength of
two kills by Brumbaugh and Megan Musselman. West Chester won the
fourth set 25-8.
In the decisive fifth set, the Mavericks trailed 4-1, but cut the
deficit to one on a kill by Pennelle. However, the Golden Rams
proved to be too much as they took the set 15-10.
Musselman notched 19 kills on 53 attempts for the Golden Rams.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Monday, October 13 when
they play host to non-conference competitor St. Rose at 7:00 p.m.
