Hamilton, Smith and Miller Help Jamaica Advance to Round Three of
the FIVB World Championships
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College junior Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) and two other former women's volleyball players, Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) and Claudia Miller (Westmoreland, Jamaica), helped the Jamaican National Volleyball Team qualify for the third round of the Fédération International de Volleyball (FIVB) World Championships with a second place finish in the North, Central America and Carribean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Pool D over the last week.
Jamaica opened up with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21) win over St. Lucia on June 10 in which Hamilton collected six spikes and a service ace. Two days later, they cruised past the Cayman Islands 3-0 (25-7, 25-19, 25-15) as Hamilton posted three spikes and a block. Jamaica added another 3-0 (25-23, 25-9, 25-13) triumph on June 13, this one versus the Bahamas with Hamilton notching six more spikes. That set up a classic five set match between Jamaica and host Barbados in the finals on June 14. Barbados came out on top 3-2 (25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 15-8) despite nine spikes and a block from Hamilton. Miller collected a total of 22 digs in the tournament, while Hamilton added 12. Smith averaged .57 attempted sets.
As the second place finisher, Jamaica has qualified for round three which will be held in Puerto Rico from July 7-9. A bid to the finals, hosted by Japan in October and November will be on the line. For complete tournament details visit www.fivb.org/.
Hamilton put together a strong sophomore campaign for the Mavericks in the fall of 2008. The 5-foot-11 middle hitter led Mercy College with 297 kills, 2.83 kills per game, a .230 hitting percentage, and ranked second with 55 blocks while leading the Mavericks to an East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament appearance. Hamilton was named to the 2008 ECC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
