Mercy College Volleyball Defeated by Queens and Puerto Rico-Mayaguez

FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College women's volleyball team fell in a pair of matches at the Queens College Tournament on Friday.  The Mavericks were defeated 3-0 by Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and 3-1 by host Queens.

In the opener, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez took the three games by scores of 30-14, 30-9, and 30-25. Sophomore Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) posted seven kills and 15 digs, while freshman Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) had six kills and two blocks. Junior Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) put up 20 assists and picked up seven digs.

Against Queens, Mercy took the first game 31-29, but the Knights came back with three straight decisions, 30-25, 30-20, and 30-26. Bruzzone led the Mavericks with 15 kills, 12 digs, and four service aces. Senior Mariola St. Fleur (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) narrowly missed a triple-double with 11 kills, 18 assists and eight digs. Senior Natalee Carty (Kingston, Jamaica) chipped in seven kills, 11 digs and three aces.

Mercy will return to action at the Queens Tournament on Saturday, October 13, versus Pace University.
