Bridgeport Takes Mercy College Volleyball in Five
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision at the hands of visiting Bridgeport on Thursday. The Mavericks are now 5-8 overall and 0-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) action. The Purple Knights improved to 14-8 overall and remain undefeated in league play at 3-0.
After Bridgeport took the opening game by a score of 30-26, Mercy bounced back with a 30-27 decision in game two, but the Purple Knights answered with a 30-28 win in the third game. The Mavericks evened the contest at 2-2 on a 30-25 win in game four, but Bridgeport nailed down the decision by taking the fifth and final game, 15-10.
Mercy freshman Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led all players with 19 kills, making only three errors in 34 attempts. Sophomore Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) posted 18 kills and 18 digs for the Mavericks, while senior Mariola St. Fleur (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) registered 13 kills and 18 digs, and senior Natalee Carty (Kingston, Jamaica) recorded 11 kills and 13 digs, giving Mercy four players with double-doubles. Junior Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) put up 51 kills and collected nine digs.
Bridgeport was led by Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasin's (Belgrade, Serbia) 18 kills and 12 digs, with Olga Sidorova (Ekaterinburg, Russia) adding 12 kills and 13 digs. Maryanne Stafford (Auburn, CA) recorded 38 assists, nine digs and seven service aces.
The Mavericks are off until Tuesday, October 2, when they travel to Dowling for another ECC match, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
