Southern Connecticut State Defeats Mercy College Volleyball, 3-1

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's volleyball team fell by a score of 3-1 to visiting Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday.  The Mavericks dropped to 5-6 on the year, while the Owls improved to 7-8.

In a tight match throughout, Mercy took the opening game 31-29, but Southern Connecticut State bounced back to win game two, 31-29. The Owls then edged Mercy 30-28 in game three and 30-25 in the fourth game.

Sophomore Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) registered 20 kills, 17 digs, and nine service aces, narrowly missing a triple-double for Mercy. Senior Mariola St. Fleur (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) led the Mavericks with 21 kills and picked up seven digs. Senior Natalee Carty (Kingston, Jamaica) posted 10 kills and nine digs. Junior Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) put up 45 assists.

Junior Nekane Mendizabal (Stratford, CT) paced the Owls with 14 kills, 13 digs, one block solo, and six block assists. Junior Lauren Coombs (Trumbull, CT) added 11 kills, 14 digs, and three block assists.

The Mavericks are off until Tuesday, September 25, when they host New Haven at 7:00 p.m. in their East Coast Conference (ECC) opener.
